4 Levels of Certification

The Whisk(e)y Marketing School provides a comprehensive Whiskey Certification Series in four parts. Each class represents a level in the Sommelier certification series.

Becoming a Level 4 Whiskey Sommelier is an achievement that requires a minimum of two years, but it will most likely take 10+ years to accomplish.

We encourage you to enroll in Level One without having a wealth of whisky experience, but passing the class is not guaranteed. Before joining the Level One class, it is highly recommended that you have some knowledge of whisky - a general understanding of its history, categories, and flavors. This will prepare you to take Level One, which we consider to be an introduction to the fundamentals of the wide world of whisky.

Upon passing level one, you will earn the prestigious whisky sommelier medallion. What’s a medallion, you ask?  It is a small token bestowed upon you at graduation and is an indication that you have understood the fundamentals and are now ready to embark on a lifelong journey of learning and exploration. Although our classes are two days long, you can spend the rest of your life delving into and educating yourself about the fascinating world of whisky.

We advise waiting at least six months between whiskey certification levels to focus on building your palate and knowledge. Additionally, you must meet industry and experience requirements before registering for the next level.

If you fail any test portions at any level, you are welcome to return and retake the exam the next time we hold that course.
